Gesture Speaks is a project that presents abstracted human-like figures, lacking facial features and communicating solely through emotive gesture. The project displays six individual figures and one piece that imagines several figures together. The figures that stand or sit alone, parallel each other, exploring how shifts in form and gesture can completely alter the emotion and communication they convey. The sole piece that depicts several figures huddled together, embody the feelings of support, love, and comfort.
In creating the figures, I have been able to find respite from my own struggles and in turn they often reflect my emotions. I invite viewers to recognise themselves and others in the figures, to see what the figures are expressing and what questions they are asking. The pieces were originally molded in clay, then cast in plaster and coated in paint, giving them a textured finish.
